The African Democratic Congress has amended its constitution following a vote by delegates at its national convention held in Abuja.
Announcing the results, Chairman of the Electoral Sub-Committee, Emeka Ihedioha, said 1,471 out of 1,576 accredited delegates voted in favour of the amendment, representing 94 percent, while 11 votes were declared invalid.
He confirmed that the constitutional amendment was duly adopted at the convention held at the Rainbow Events Centre.
Earlier, Chairman of the Legal and Convention Processes Committee, Olumide Apata, led the ratification of key resolutions from recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings. These included waivers on membership requirements, suspension of zoning provisions for executive positions, and adjustments to succession rules within the party.
The convention also ratified the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Ralph Nwosu, with a new leadership structure under David Mark assuming control of the party’s affairs.
In his closing remarks, Mark described the convention as a major milestone, expressing confidence in the party’s readiness for the 2027 general elections.
The party also announced the expulsion of factional chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe and several other members over alleged anti-party activities.
Meanwhile, prominent political figures at the convention criticised the current administration. Atiku Abubakar accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of undermining democracy, while Peter Obi warned about Nigeria’s rising debt profile.
Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, raised concerns over worsening insecurity, and Rauf Aregbesola criticised the government’s economic policies.
Despite the absence of monitoring by INEC due to ongoing legal disputes, the convention proceeded, marking a significant development in the party’s internal restructuring ahead of the 2027 elections.
