Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed uncertainty about his 2027 presidential ambitions, stating that his decision will depend on the emergence of a strong political platform.
Atiku, who has contested the presidency six times, made the remarks in a yet-to-be-aired interview on the television program Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie. His statement comes just days after he announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Bola Tinubu.
When asked if he would run in the next election, Atiku responded: “I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”
Although he did not confirm his candidacy, Atiku emphasized that Nigeria is in dire need of experienced and credible leadership.
“I have not seen Nigeria in greater need of experienced and credible leadership than now,” he said. He also recalled the successful 2014 opposition merger, which led to the emergence of a single candidate who was supported by all coalition members, ultimately leading to victory.
Speculations continue to swirl about Atiku’s potential alliances, with reports suggesting he may back former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in the 2027 race. However, Atiku has yet to make any official endorsements.
