American sprinter Gabby Thomas claimed a resounding victory in the women’s Olympic 200m in Paris on Tuesday, earning her first major title. Thomas clocked an impressive 21.83sec, securing a win ahead of St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred, who finished with 22.08sec, and her teammate Brittany Brown, who claimed bronze in 22.20sec.
At 27 years old, Thomas, a bronze medallist at the Tokyo Games, became the first American woman to win an Olympic short sprint title since Allyson Felix’s victory in the 200m at the 2012 London Games.
Nigeria’s Favour Ofili finished in sixth place, while St. Lucia’s Alfred aimed to secure an Olympic sprint double following her recent win in the 100m race.
At the event, Thomas showcased her exceptional speed and strength, leading from the start and finishing with a commanding lead. Her outstanding performance solidified her status as the fastest woman over this distance, securing a well-deserved gold medal.
