The Senate on Thursday directed an investigation into recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), initiating a probe into the controversial actions that have displaced numerous residents.
An investigative committee has been established to examine the demolitions and their legal basis, with a mandate to report back to the Senate within a specified timeframe. The committee will also summon FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to explain the rationale behind the demolitions, which have drawn widespread criticism.
Motion Highlights
The motion, sponsored by Senator Ireti Kingibe (FCT Senatorial District), raised concerns about the legality of the demolitions and called for an immediate halt to further actions. Kingibe stressed the need for accountability, urging the Senate to act swiftly to protect residents’ rights and prevent undue hardship.
Julius Berger Summoned Over Odukpani-Itu Highway
In a separate motion led by Senator Osita Ngwu, the Senate summoned the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC over the company’s failure to respond to invitations regarding the Odukpani-Itu Highway project.
The highway, which links Odukpani in Cross River State to Itu in Akwa Ibom State, is a critical infrastructure project supporting transportation and economic activities in the South-South region. Despite receiving over ₦18 billion in public funds, Julius Berger has allegedly failed to provide updates or respond to legislative inquiries.
Senate Condemns Contempt
The Senate criticized Julius Berger’s refusal to honor its invitations, labeling the action as contempt of the National Assembly and a violation of constitutional authority. In response, the Senate invoked its constitutional powers to issue a warrant of arrest, compelling the Managing Director’s appearance at a rescheduled investigative hearing.
