President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory in Saturday’s Edo State governorship election. Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes, defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes, and Labour Party (LP) candidate Olumide Akpata, who came third with 22,763 votes. Fourteen other candidates received fewer votes.
In a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Sunday, Tinubu urged Okpebholo to remain humble and view his victory as a “challenging call to service.” The President encouraged him to unite Edo State by reaching out to his political rivals for the state’s development.
Tinubu also commended the other candidates for contributing to Nigeria’s democratic process, highlighting the peaceful nature of the election as a testament to the country’s stable democracy. He urged those dissatisfied with the results to seek legal redress and praised INEC and security agencies for conducting a successful and largely peaceful election.
