Chelsea are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of highly rated Bosnian teenager Kerim Alajbegović, with negotiations gathering momentum as the Premier League club looks to beat rival suitors to his signature.
The 18-year-old forward has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents after impressing at Salzburg before returning to Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga club are now understood to be open to selling him for a significant profit.
Italian side AS Roma remain interested in Alajbegović, but reports suggest a move to Serie A has become increasingly unlikely. Although the player is said to favour a switch to Roma, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly unconvinced the teenager is ready for a regular first-team role and is instead prioritising more experienced options.
Chelsea have consequently moved into a strong position in the race for the youngster. Reports indicate that Alajbegović’s father, who also acts as his agent, has expressed the player’s desire to join the Blues under manager Xabi Alonso.
The West London club are also believed to be willing to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s €35 million asking price, although player sales may be required before the transfer can be completed.
Alajbegović further enhanced his reputation with impressive performances for Bosnia and Herzegovina during their successful FIFA World Cup qualification campaign and continued to shine on the international stage.
Should the deal go through, Chelsea are expected to consider sending the teenager out on loan to continue his development before integrating him into the first team, a strategy the club has regularly adopted with emerging talents.
The Blues are confident the investment could prove worthwhile if the young attacker continues his rapid progress.
