Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson as new manager Xabi Alonso continues to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.
According to transfer expert David Ornstein, the Blues are actively pursuing the experienced England international, with Brentford prepared to allow the 36-year-old to leave on a free transfer despite him having a year remaining on his contract. Henderson is also understood to be open to a move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Henderson reflects a shift in the club’s transfer strategy under Alonso. Since Todd Boehly’s takeover, the West London club have largely focused on recruiting young talents, but inconsistent performances in recent seasons have prompted a greater emphasis on experienced players.
The Blues recently failed in an attempt to sign Granit Xhaka after Sunderland rejected their approach for the former Arsenal midfielder. Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck as Alonso looks to add leadership and experience to his squad.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has also reported that two other clubs are interested in Henderson, although Chelsea are currently regarded as frontrunners for his signature.
Chelsea’s midfield options currently include Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Roméo Lavia and Dário Essugo following Andrey Santos’ departure to Manchester United. However, injuries limited both Lavia and Essugo last season, while Fernández has been linked with a potential exit, increasing the club’s need for midfield reinforcements.
Henderson brings significant experience, having captained Liverpool to Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles under Jürgen Klopp. Last season, he made 34 appearances across all competitions, contributing four goals and assists combined, while also earning selection in England’s FIFA World Cup squad.
Chelsea believe the veteran midfielder could provide valuable leadership if a deal is completed before the close of the transfer window.
The Blues have already strengthened their squad this summer with the signings of Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, Valentino Barco and Geovany Quenda, although Emegha has recently been linked with a move away.
