Dangote Cement Plc has trained and graduated over 40 beneficiaries in fish farming and entrepreneurship at its Obajana plant, as part of its host communities empowerment programme aimed at promoting self-reliance and economic growth.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Plant Director, Azad Nawabuddin, described the initiative as a strategic intervention designed to create jobs and strengthen the local economy. He noted that fish farming goes beyond a source of income, as it fosters discipline, patience, and long-term planning—qualities vital for sustainable community development.
According to him, the programme has a multiplier effect, generating opportunities across the value chain, including feed supply, transportation, marketing, and processing. “When a community can feed itself, it not only strengthens its economy but also builds pride and resilience,” he said.
Also speaking, General Manager and Head of Social Performance, Ademola Adeyemi, said the initiative forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy focused on delivering sustainable impact in host communities.
A representative of the Technical Adviser on CSR to the Kogi State Governor, Akinola Oluropo Babatunde, commended Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, for sustained investment in community development. He urged beneficiaries to apply the skills acquired to improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to society.
The Area Manager of the Industrial Training Fund, Lokoja Area Office, Bajeh Thomas, disclosed that participants were provided with starter packs, including juvenile fish and feed, to support the launch of their businesses. He added that the agency would conduct follow-up assessments to ensure the programme achieves its intended outcomes.
The beneficiaries, predominantly women from Iwaa, Oyo, Obajana, and Apata communities, underwent intensive hands-on training aimed at enhancing livelihoods and promoting sustainable development.
Traditional leaders, including the Bajana of Obajana, Idowu Isenibi, and the Elesho of Iwaa, Abel Alade, urged participants to cascade the knowledge gained to others, noting that the initiative would have lasting benefits for families and the broader community.
The programme builds on Dangote Cement’s ongoing community empowerment efforts, which include training in poultry production, solar entrepreneurship, and fashion design.
