The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that it is close to reaching an agreement with Jurgen Klopp to become the next head coach of the national team, but final approval from his current employer, Red Bull, is still required.
The DFB said president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held talks with Klopp in New York on Friday over his potential appointment, with both sides reaching an understanding on key contract details.
“Discussions will continue next week. Both parties are confident that the negotiations, subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull, can ultimately be concluded successfully,” the federation said in a statement.
Klopp has emerged as the DFB’s preferred choice to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s elimination from the World Cup following a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay.
The 59-year-old is regarded as one of football’s top coaches, having enjoyed successful spells with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, where he won major domestic and international honours.
Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 and later took up the role of head of global football at Red Bull, where he oversees the company’s network of clubs across Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States and Japan.
The former Liverpool manager recently said he felt “more than recharged” after taking time away from frontline coaching.
Germany has struggled since winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, suffering consecutive group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 tournaments before another disappointing campaign in North America this summer.
