Novak Djokovic joined tennis greats Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors in the exclusive 100-title club after a dramatic comeback win over Hubert Hurkacz in the Geneva Open final on Saturday.
The 38-year-old Serb battled for over three hours to claim a 5-7, 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/2) victory, marking his first tournament triumph since capturing Olympic gold against Carlos Alcaraz in Paris last summer.
Djokovic, playing in Switzerland in search of form ahead of the French Open, became the third man in history to win 100 ATP titles and the first to do so in 20 consecutive seasons.
“I had to work for it, that’s for sure,” said Djokovic after the match. “He [Hurkacz] was probably closer to the victory the entire match than me. A few points decide it, an incredible match… and I’m delighted to clinch the 100 here.”
The former world No. 1 entered Geneva with a disappointing clay-court season behind him, having lost early in Monte Carlo and Madrid. But the lower-profile tournament proved the perfect stage for Djokovic to rediscover his rhythm just days before the start of Roland Garros, where he will seek a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.
Saturday’s match was a showcase of resilience. After dropping the first set with a double fault on set point, Djokovic found himself under pressure again in the second. But he saved a key service game at 5-6 with an ace and dominated the tie-break to force a decider.
The third set mirrored the earlier drama. Djokovic surrendered an early break, only for Hurkacz to falter at 5-3, allowing the Serb back into the contest. In the final-set tie-break, Djokovic’s composure prevailed as he capitalized on a string of Hurkacz errors to close out the match with an ace.
Despite the loss, Hurkacz — who is still chasing his first title since April 2024 — paid tribute to his opponent. “It’s really inspiring how you conduct yourself on and off the court,” the Polish No. 2 said.
Djokovic will now shift focus to the French Open, where he opens against American Mackenzie McDonald, aiming to make further history on the Parisian clay.
