The Federal Government has set an ambitious new target to ramp up daily gas production to 12 billion cubic feet by the year 2030, as part of efforts to drive economic growth, industrialisation, and energy diversification.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, represented by Team Lead for Gas, Lateef Biobaku, during an engagement between Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) and over 100 gas off-takers in the Agbara-Ota industrial zone in Ogun State.
In a statement released by SNG on Friday and made available to Channels Television, Biobaku shared the administration’s long-term vision for the oil and gas sector.
“Our vision is to unlock Nigeria’s energy potential to fuel economic growth, drive industrialisation, and help diversify the economy. The goal is to attract investments and increase oil production to 4 million barrels per day and gas production to 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030,” he said.
According to data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigeria produced 2.5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas in 2024. Of this, 2.31 TCF was utilised, while 192.89 billion standard cubic feet were flared—raising environmental concerns and highlighting the need for improved gas utilisation strategies.
The government’s renewed push comes amid increasing global demand for cleaner energy sources and a national agenda to reduce reliance on crude oil revenues. It also aligns with efforts to develop both associated gas—found alongside oil—and non-associated gas extracted independently from dedicated gas fields.
Industry stakeholders view the 2030 target as a bold step towards transforming Nigeria into a major gas-powered economy, with implications for power generation, manufacturing, and exports.
