A new phase of institutional reform is underway at NNPC Medical Services Limited (NMSL), driven by its Chief Operating Officer, Dickson Bada, whose leadership is repositioning the organisation as a financially stable and innovation-driven healthcare provider.
Dr. Bada, a consultant surgeon and healthcare strategist, oversees six hospitals located in Abuja, Benin, Kaduna, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Warri. His mandate spans medical strategy, operational governance, digital transformation, and long-term sustainability.
A Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, Dr. Bada trained in Minimal Access Surgery at the University of Strasbourg and later advanced his expertise in Medical Informatics at City University London. His career includes professional experience in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria, including contributions to Nigeria’s first hospital Public-Private Partnership initiative at Garki Hospital, Abuja.
Since assuming leadership at NMSL, Dr. Bada has implemented structural reforms aimed at restoring financial discipline and operational efficiency. Within 10 months, the organisation moved from a negative net profit position to posting a positive net profit in 2025. The turnaround was achieved through business model realignment, organisational restructuring, workforce optimisation, procurement reforms, and enhanced deployment of the hospital-wide Health Information System (HIS).
Central to the transformation is the NNPC Multispecialty Hospital (NMSH) Utako, Abuja, positioned as the group’s flagship facility. The hospital provides emergency, surgical, medical, diagnostic, and occupational health services and is open to the general public. Under Dr. Bada’s leadership, the facility has expanded its adoption of minimal access surgical techniques, reducing recovery time and complications. It has also commenced interventional radiology procedures, with plans underway to introduce advanced robotic orthopaedic surgeries.
Beyond infrastructure upgrades, Dr. Bada has led capital engagements to expand specialised services while maintaining fiscal prudence. Other NMSL hospitals across the country are progressing toward similar operational standards, reinforcing the organisation’s ambition to become a benchmark for healthcare excellence in Nigeria.
Dr. Bada has also prioritised governance, regulatory compliance, and patient safety, embedding structured infection prevention systems and professional development initiatives. He maintains engagement with global surgical bodies, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and IRCAD, to align local practice with international standards.
Positioning healthcare institutions as complex enterprises requiring governance discipline and technological innovation, Dr. Bada’s leadership reflects a broader shift toward systemic, accountable, and economically sustainable healthcare reform in Nigeria. Under his stewardship, NMSL continues to strengthen its capacity to deliver advanced medical care nationwide.
