The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation following allegations by Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips, that some of its operatives extorted ₦10 million from him during his detention in 2024.
Oladips recounted on the Trending Podcast that he was arrested in a midnight raid at his Lagos estate in November 2024, alongside other residents. He claimed he spent five days in custody and was released only after paying the alleged bribe, despite no incriminating evidence being found against him.
“They collected money (₦10 million) from me before they released me. They didn’t find anything on me. So, what was the money for? What was all that stress and suffering for? It’s just Nigeria. Nigeria just happened to me,” he said.
In response, the EFCC issued a statement via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, stating it takes the allegations “with great seriousness” and has commenced a formal inquiry.
The commission said officers involved in the case have been summoned to EFCC headquarters and relieved of operational duties pending the investigation.
“The grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true character of the EFCC. We remain committed to integrity and accountability and will take necessary action against any staff found culpable,” the statement read.
The EFCC also warned that if the rapper’s claims are found to be false or malicious, appropriate sanctions would be imposed.
“The public is enjoined to await the result of the investigations and continue to have faith in the Commission’s mission to tackle economic and financial crimes and corruption,” it added.
This marks another high-profile probe for the EFCC, highlighting ongoing concerns about accountability within Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies.
