Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored as Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, handing Roberto De Zerbi’s side a second consecutive Premier League defeat.
Newcastle struck twice in the second half to deepen Tottenham’s difficult start to the season, with Elanga opening the scoring before Wissa sealed the points in north London.
The victory gave Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle his first Premier League win since replacing Eddie Howe. Jaissle had begun his reign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
For De Zerbi, the defeat was another disappointing result after Tottenham suffered a 3-0 loss to Brentford on the opening weekend.
Tottenham have spent more than £300 million ($406 million) during the close-season as De Zerbi attempts to rebuild a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last term.
The club have now failed to score in their opening two league matches of a season for the first time since 1992-93.
Omar Marmoush made his Tottenham debut after joining on loan from Manchester City, but the Egypt international struggled to influence the game. Another City arrival, Savio, missed the match with a muscular injury.
Tottenham had appeared to regain confidence after a 5-1 League Cup win over Championship side Charlton in midweek, but they were unable to reproduce that performance against Newcastle.
Elanga almost gave Newcastle an early lead when his first-minute lob was cleared just before crossing the line. Tottenham responded with chances of their own, with Mathys Tel forcing a save from Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Pedro Porro and Marmoush also went close, while Sandro Tonali missed a good opportunity shortly before half-time against his former club.
The Italian was repeatedly jeered by Newcastle supporters following his £100 million move to Tottenham in July.
Newcastle finally broke the deadlock in the second half when Elanga controlled Amar Dedic’s cushioned header before turning sharply and firing into the net from just inside the box.
Wissa doubled the advantage in the 72nd minute, converting with an over-the-shoulder flick from close range after Nick Woltemade headed a corner into his path.
Tottenham were unable to mount a response as frustrated supporters began leaving the stadium before the final whistle.
Tonali was substituted in the closing stages to further compound a miserable afternoon for the visitors, with Newcastle fans continuing to voice their disapproval.
