The Kebbi State Government has announced February 11 to 14 as the dates for the 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival.
The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, disclosed this to journalists on Friday after an expanded meeting of the State Festival Main Committee and the Emirate Local Organising Committee held at the Deputy Governor’s Office.
The emir said the Argungu Fishing Festival originated as a peace initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate jihadists and the Kanta Kingdom, noting that its historical importance later earned it recognition by UNESCO as an international cultural event.
He added that the festival also played a unifying role after the Nigerian Civil War, bringing together fishermen from different parts of the country during the administration of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as a symbol of national unity.
According to the emir, this year’s edition is expected to attract dignitaries from around the world and will serve as a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Argungu Kingdom to a global audience.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the State Main Committee and Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, said preparations were already at an advanced stage.
He noted that several subcommittees had been constituted to ensure the smooth and successful hosting of the festival, adding that arrangements covering venue preparation, hospitality, logistics and awards for deserving winners were in place.
Senator Tafida urged members of the various committees to remain committed to their responsibilities, stressing the importance of sustained effort in delivering a successful international event.
