Ukrainian negotiators have arrived in the United States for talks with the administration of President Donald Trump aimed at ending nearly four years of war with Russia, a member of the delegation confirmed on Saturday.
The discussions are scheduled to take place in Miami, just days ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian team is expected to meet Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s special envoy, as well as Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law.
Kyrylo Budanov, a top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky, said in a social media post that he had arrived in the United States alongside Ukraine’s security chief Rustem Umerov and senior negotiator David Arakhamia.
“Together we will have an important conversation with our American partners regarding the details of the peace agreement,” Budanov said, adding that a joint meeting was planned with Witkoff, Kushner and US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll.
President Trump has repeatedly pushed for an end to the conflict, the deadliest in Europe since World War Two, but has expressed frustration with both Moscow and Kyiv as efforts to broker a breakthrough have so far failed.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States said on Friday that the talks would centre on security guarantees and post-war reconstruction. Zelensky also said he hoped Ukraine would sign agreements with Washington as early as next week.
