Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United came from behind to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford and secure their first win of the season.
Michael Carrick’s side endured a difficult start, with Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda forcing saves from goalkeeper Senne Lammens before Ipswich took the lead.
Abdul Fatawu beat Luke Shaw and set up Leif Davis, who fired a low effort into the top corner to give the visitors the advantage.
United responded after Marcelino Nunez slipped in midfield. Matheus Cunha won possession and found Fernandes, who fired home with his left foot to level the score.
Bryan Mbeumo hit the crossbar from close range early in the second half as United continued to push for the lead.
The hosts eventually went ahead when Harry Maguire’s effort was diverted into his own net by Jacob Greaves. Although there were appeals for a handball against Maguire, the goal was allowed to stand because Greaves made the final touch.
Greaves’ difficult afternoon continued when he brought down Cunha inside the area after the Brazilian had broken through on goal. Fernandes converted the resulting penalty to put United 3-1 ahead.
The captain completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, before setting up Mbeumo with a pass behind the Ipswich defence. Mbeumo calmly lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 5-1.
Ipswich substitute Chuba Akpom scored in stoppage time, but the goal was only a consolation as United comfortably secured all three points.
The victory also provided an encouraging sight for United supporters, with academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford starting the match, with Rashford making his first start since 2024.
The performance was not flawless, but United’s attacking quality was on full display as they began their season with a much-needed victory.
