The Federal Government and the Niger State Government have commenced the development of what is expected to be Nigeria’s largest solar-powered industrial project, marking a significant step in the country’s industrialisation and renewable energy agenda.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in Niger State, was attended by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe; Minister of Steel Development, Prince Abubakar Audu; Minister of Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh; Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State; and executives of Abuja Steel Mills Limited, a subsidiary of the African Industries Group.
During the event, the Niger State Government formally handed over 500 hectares of land to Abuja Steel Mills for the construction of an industrial park and an integrated steel manufacturing plant powered by renewable energy.
A key component of the project is a 200-megawatt solar mini-grid, which stakeholders described as the largest embedded renewable energy installation designed to power an industrial facility in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The initiative is expected to support the Federal Government’s industrial development objectives under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by combining large-scale manufacturing with sustainable energy solutions.
Unlike conventional industrial facilities that rely heavily on the national grid, the steel plant will operate using dedicated off-grid renewable energy infrastructure, providing a stable and reliable power supply for manufacturing activities.
Stakeholders said the project would demonstrate the potential of embedded power generation to drive industrial growth, reduce energy costs for manufacturers and minimise disruptions associated with grid power challenges.
Industry experts noted that the development could serve as a model for future industrial projects across Nigeria, leveraging the country’s abundant solar resources to boost production and economic growth.
The project also aligns with Nigeria’s clean energy transition goals by encouraging private-sector investment in renewable energy infrastructure through a framework supported by government policies, land allocation and regulatory approvals.
Governor Bago said the state’s support for the initiative reflects its commitment to attracting investment and accelerating industrial development through strategic partnerships.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Power reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the project’s energy infrastructure, describing it as a critical investment for Nigeria’s economic development.
Analysts said the project sends a strong signal to local and international investors about Nigeria’s commitment to using clean energy as a catalyst for industrial expansion and long-term economic growth.Copyright TRUSTAFRICA NEWS.
