A fire has gutted a building in the Mile 2 area of Lagos, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) said the structure, located within the Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate, was still being attended to as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
In a statement on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, LSFRS reassured the public: “Fire Alert! The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a fire outbreak at Amuwo Odofin Industrial Estate, Mile 2, Lagos. We’re on top of the situation, and the public need not panic.”
Details about the building’s ownership, purpose, or casualties were not immediately available.
The incident comes a month after a devastating fire on December 24, 2025, at the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island, which claimed eight lives, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed. Preliminary investigations suggested that human error—specifically unsafe generator use and refuelling across different floors—contributed to the blaze, which was further intensified by combustible materials stored in the building. Structural weaknesses caused parts of the high-rise to collapse, trapping several victims.
Lagos has experienced multiple fire incidents in recent weeks. On January 20, a storey commercial building in Computer Village, Ikeja, was gutted in a fire around 1:55 a.m., destroying goods worth millions of naira, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). Days later, a one-storey shopping complex at 1 Amore Street, Ajegunle Boundary, was also destroyed by fire, with significant losses reported.
The Mile 2 fire underscores ongoing concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in Lagos’ commercial and industrial zones.
