In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s vegetation cover, FirstBank, in collaboration with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), has kicked off an extensive tree-planting initiative. This effort, led by Aishatu Bubaram, Group Executive of Commercial Banking (North) at FirstBank, is a key feature of the bank’s 2024 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Week.
The launch event took place at Government Secondary School (GSS), Karshi, Abuja, where the bank began the process of planting 50,000 trees nationwide. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding the environment.
Speaking at the event, Bubaram underscored the bank’s commitment to environmental conservation. “These trees are more than just plants; they represent a legacy for future generations,” she stated. “FirstBank is well on its way to achieving our goal of planting 50,000 trees by 2024, having already planted 30,000 trees this year alone.”
Bubaram highlighted the vital role trees play in maintaining environmental balance, noting their ability to purify air, stabilize climates, prevent soil erosion, and support diverse ecosystems. “Each tree planted in Abuja is a step towards improving air quality, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the city’s natural beauty,” she added, urging other financial institutions and individuals to join the cause for a greener Nigeria.
Muhammad Garba Beyo, the NCF’s Zonal Coordinator, reaffirmed the Foundation’s dedication to this initiative, aligning with its mission to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable development. “Our Green Recovery initiative is crucial in addressing Nigeria’s alarming vegetation deficit, which currently stands at less than 3%,” Beyo said, expressing gratitude to FirstBank for their support and commitment to nurturing the seedlings into mature trees.
The event, which was strategically held at GSS Karshi due to the school’s ample space and aging trees, also saw the participation of Tanko Madugu Wando, Vice Principal (Administration) at the school.
This tree-planting initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on both the local environment in Abuja and the broader ecological landscape of Nigeria.
