A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the future Mbanza Congo Centrality in Angola’s Zaire Province, marking a new phase in the country’s push for integrated urban development and improved housing delivery.
The project, located in the historic city of Mbanza Congo—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key symbol of national identity—aims to promote scalable, inclusive, and resilient housing solutions across Africa.
The announcement comes ahead of the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13), scheduled to hold in Baku, Azerbaijan, from May 17 to 22, 2026, where Mitrelli is expected to participate alongside the Angolan government in discussions on expanding access to adequate housing and building inclusive, sustainable cities.
With the new project, Mitrelli’s portfolio in Angola rises to 14 integrated urban developments, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the country and its broader expansion across Africa.
Aligned with Angola’s housing policy, the Mbanza Congo Centrality will deliver 1,500 three-bedroom housing units, designed to benefit about 10,500 residents. The development will also include schools, a kindergarten, health centre, police station, commercial areas, sports facilities, public spaces, as well as water, energy, sanitation, and road infrastructure.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including the Minister of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing, H.E. Carlos Alberto da Silva Gregório dos Santos, and the Governor of Zaire Province, H.E. Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, alongside other stakeholders and community representatives.
The project handover was formalised through a signing ceremony between the National Director for Land Management and Housing, Amílcar Paulo Isaac Lutucuta, and Mitrelli’s Urbanization Director, Henrique Costa.
Speaking at the event, the Minister described the project as a source of pride for Zaire Province, noting that an additional 1,500 housing units have also been approved for Soyo Municipality.
Henrique Costa said the project reflects Mitrelli’s continued commitment to integrated urban development in Angola, adding that it combines housing with essential services, economic opportunities, and improved quality of life.
The Mbanza Congo Centrality is expected to stimulate economic activity in Zaire Province through job creation, business development, and enhanced regional value, while aligning modern urban growth with cultural and historical heritage.
