João Pedro scored a dramatic late hat-trick as Xabi Alonso began his Chelsea reign with a thrilling 6-4 pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.
The Blues produced an impressive attacking display in a 10-goal contest at Accor Stadium, but defensive weaknesses exposed areas Alonso will need to address before the start of the Premier League season.
Chelsea’s lead changed hands five times during a frantic encounter, with Alonso naming a youthful starting lineup featuring senior players including Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Dário Essugo.
New signing Dastan Satpaev opened the scoring for Chelsea, but Western Sydney repeatedly punished defensive mistakes to keep the Australian side in the game.
After falling behind in the second half, Alonso turned to several experienced substitutes in an attempt to regain control. João Pedro responded in emphatic fashion, scoring three late goals to complete the comeback and secure victory for the Premier League club.
Alonso praised the Brazilian forward’s determination and ambition following his match-winning performance.
“He is very hungry. He is really, really determined to have a great season. He scored many goals but I think he wants to keep scoring more and more,” Alonso said.
Despite the positive result, Chelsea’s defensive performance raised concerns, with their young backline struggling to deal with the hosts’ attacking pressure.
Anthony Pantzopoulos and Aydan Hammond capitalised on early errors, while Dylan Scicluna restored Western Sydney’s advantage after a deflected clearance. Chelsea also conceded another goal after a misplaced pass from Estevão allowed Awan Lual to score.
However, the Blues’ attacking quality proved decisive, with summer signing Jamie Gittens continuing his impressive form by scoring shortly after coming off the bench.
The victory gives Alonso a winning start at Chelsea, although the new manager will know defensive improvements are required ahead of the club’s competitive fixtures.
