A county sheriff in Kentucky was charged with murder on Thursday following the alleged shooting and killing of a district court judge. Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines was taken into custody after a fatal altercation at the Letcher County courthouse, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.
Stines faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, as confirmed by CBS News. Authorities report that the shooting occurred in Mullins’ office after a heated argument between the two men. However, investigators have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the incident.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed the tragedy in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon,” Beshear wrote. “There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.”
The United States continues to grapple with gun violence, a persistent issue across the nation. Kentucky has seen a string of incidents in recent weeks, including a highway shooting earlier this month that left five people injured. The shooter was found dead after a 10-day manhunt.
Despite widespread support among Americans for stricter gun regulations, the nation’s powerful gun rights lobby, constitutional protections, and a deeply ingrained culture surrounding firearm ownership have consistently stymied efforts to impose stricter gun control measures.
