Kenyan Pastor Faces Investigation for Cult Activities, Sexual Abuse

A Kenyan pastor, Daniel Mururu, is under investigation for alleged cult activities and sexual abuse following a violent incident involving his church in Meru County. The church was set ablaze by local residents late last month after accusations surfaced against Mururu and his associates.

According to a police report, Mururu, of the East African Pentecostal Churches of Kenya, and other church officials are accused of indecent assaults, including stripping women, shaving their pubic hair, and engaging in sexual intercourse with them. The victims, including a 17-year-old schoolgirl who reportedly became pregnant, range in age from 17 to 70.

Police investigations have revealed that Mururu was allegedly running a cult that coerced members into committing indecent acts under the threat of sickness or barrenness. The case has drawn attention to Kenya’s ongoing struggle to regulate rogue churches and cults.

The recent scandal follows a global shock over the “Shakahola forest massacre,” where a doomsday cult leader was arrested in April 2023 after mass graves were discovered. The tragedy highlighted the need for stricter oversight of religious organizations in Kenya.
