The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, following allegations of statutory and financial misconduct.
Obasa, who had faced a series of controversies surrounding his financial dealings, was removed from office on Monday. The decision comes just weeks after he was accused of spending a staggering N17 billion to repair a gate leading to the Assembly complex.
New Leadership Installed
In the wake of the impeachment, the Assembly appointed Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker and representative of Apapa Constituency 1, as the new Speaker. Meranda, who previously served as the Chief Whip of the House, is now the first woman to hold the position in the history of the Lagos State legislature.
Additionally, Mojeed Fatai has been named the new Deputy Speaker.
A Tumultuous Tenure
Obasa’s tenure as Speaker was marked by allegations of financial impropriety, with critics citing his management of Assembly funds as a major source of contention. The recent accusation of exorbitant spending on infrastructure appears to have been the tipping point for his removal.
The impeachment signals a significant shift in the leadership of the Lagos Assembly, as lawmakers seek to restore public confidence in the state’s legislative body. Neither Obasa nor his representatives have issued an official statement regarding the impeachment as of press time.
