Lagos State Government has expressed profound condolences to acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie over the tragic death of her son, Nkanu, following a medical incident at a private healthcare facility in Lagos on January 6, 2026.
In a statement, the government described the loss of a child as “profoundly tragic” and assured the family of its support, concern, and commitment to justice.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. HEFAMAA has already visited the facility as part of the ongoing inquiry and will review all allegations, including compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct, and patient safety standards.
As the statutory regulator of public and private health facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA will work closely with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant bodies to ensure a credible and holistic investigation. The findings of the inquiry will be made public upon completion to uphold transparency and accountability.
The Lagos State Government emphasized that any individual or institution found guilty of negligence, misconduct, or regulatory violations will face the full force of the law. Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid speculation while the investigation proceeds.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the health, safety, and rights of all residents and strengthening oversight of medical practice to prevent similar tragedies.
