Manchester City secured an eighth FA Cup title after Antoine Semenyo produced a moment of brilliance to seal a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.
The Ghana winger delivered the decisive goal in the second half, improvising with an audacious back-flick to divert Erling Haaland’s cross into the net in a match that had largely been short on clear chances.
The strike proved enough to give City their second trophy of the season, following their League Cup triumph over Arsenal in March, and marked a third FA Cup success under manager Pep Guardiola.
Semenyo’s goal places him among the competition’s most memorable final scorers, alongside FA Cup icons such as Ricky Villa, Michael Owen, Roberto Di Matteo and Steven Gerrard.
Ironically, the 26-year-old forward, signed from Bournemouth in the January transfer window, was born near Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium in west London.
The victory ended City’s run of two consecutive FA Cup final defeats and extended Guardiola’s remarkable trophy haul to 20 since taking charge of the club.
Chelsea, meanwhile, endured another frustrating outing under interim manager Calum McFarlane, offering little threat despite periods of defensive resilience.
City dominated possession in a cagey first half, with Erling Haaland coming closest when his powerful effort was saved by Robert Sánchez, while Chelsea appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty before the break.
After the restart, Semenyo missed a clear chance before Moisés Caicedo’s effort was cleared off the line by Rodri, but City eventually made the breakthrough in the 72nd minute.
Haaland drove into the Chelsea box and cut the ball back for Semenyo, who executed his stunning back-heel finish to secure victory and another trophy for Guardiola’s side.
