Manchester United has dismissed manager Erik ten Hag, the club confirmed Monday, with the team languishing in 14th place after nine Premier League games. United announced former club icon Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim head coach while a search for a permanent manager is underway.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” read the official club statement. “Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching staff, as we recruit a permanent replacement.”
The 54-year-old Dutch manager’s tenure had been under scrutiny since last season, which saw United finish a disappointing eighth—their worst Premier League finish in years. Despite Jim Ratcliffe’s recent takeover of football operations, Ten Hag was initially retained to maintain stability. However, a lack of progress and consistency ultimately led to his dismissal.
Tensions escalated following Sunday’s 2-1 loss to struggling West Ham, where United failed to convert numerous scoring chances. The season’s rocky start also included three Europa League draws from winning positions, adding to pressure on the manager. Despite these setbacks, Ten Hag had hoped to guide the club to resurgence, signing an extended contract until 2026 and leading United to a surprise FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City last season.
United’s recent struggles come despite significant investment in the squad, with over £600 million spent on player signings since Ten Hag’s arrival in the 2022-23 season.
