Markets Sink as Israeli Strikes Intensify, Gold Hits Record

Global financial markets tumbled on Tuesday as escalating Israeli airstrikes on Gaza heightened geopolitical tensions, triggering a broad selloff on Wall Street and pushing gold prices to record highs. The downturn coincided with a crucial U.S. Federal Reserve meeting, where policymakers convened amid growing economic uncertainty.

According to Reuters, the latest Israeli missile strikes have claimed over 400 lives in Gaza, further intensifying tensions in the Middle East. The conflict overshadowed a diplomatic call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which both leaders discussed potential conditions for ending Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

The heightened instability sent all three major U.S. stock indexes into negative territory, with tech-heavy megacap stocks dragging the Nasdaq Composite down the most. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 334.15 points, or 0.80%, to close at 41,505.78, while the S&P 500 fell 68.53 points, or 1.21%, to 5,606.59. The Nasdaq Composite posted the steepest decline, plunging 313.10 points, or 1.76%, to settle at 17,496.33.

“There’s a lot of turmoil in the world, and things can change direction pretty quickly,” said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Adding to market volatility, the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting is expected to conclude with no changes to interest rates. Investors remain cautious over the central bank’s approach to inflation, particularly amid uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration’s shifting tariff policies.

“The markets don’t know where tariffs stand—whether they’re on or off,” Tuz noted. “I was more surprised by the rally of the past two days than by today’s weakness.”

Despite the broader downturn, some U.S. economic indicators continued to show resilience, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Germany’s parliament approved a sweeping government spending overhaul, causing fluctuations in the euro. However, the decision provided a boost to European stocks, with German shares approaching record highs.

As geopolitical uncertainty deepens, investors are closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy stance, both of which are expected to drive market direction in the coming weeks.
