MTN Unveils Solar-Powered Digital Centre in Lagos Community

By Ayomide Otitoju

MTN Nigeria has commissioned a solar-powered Y’ello Box digital centre in Iraboko community, Awoyaya, as part of efforts to drive grassroots digital inclusion.

The initiative, executed under the company’s staff-led Y’ello Care programme, underscores its “Connecting at the Roots” strategy aimed at expanding access to digital resources in underserved communities. The project also reflects employee contributions, with over 1,400 staff members collectively dedicating 3,947 volunteer hours during the 2025 outreach campaign.

The handover ceremony was led by Ifeoma Utah, General Manager, Commercial Legal, representing the Chief Corporate Services Officer, Tobe Okigbo. She noted that the Y’ello Care initiative is driven by employees who contribute resources annually to support community development and empowerment efforts.

Utah emphasised that the company’s commitment extends beyond business operations, focusing on enabling communities and fostering sustainable growth.

The newly inaugurated digital hub is equipped with 10 computers, high-speed internet connectivity, and a solar-powered system that supports air conditioning and water facilities, providing a conducive environment for learning and digital engagement.

Community leaders described the project as a significant step toward bridging the digital divide. Chairman of the Community Development Association, Chief Oladunni Yinka Onatoye, highlighted the importance of inclusive digital transformation, noting that access to technology is critical to future development.

In addition to the facility, MoMo PSB distributed essential items including solar-powered fans, point-of-sale (POS) machines, and other materials to support residents and small businesses.

The programme also featured financial literacy sessions and empowerment initiatives, with selected residents receiving grants and POS devices to become mobile money agents, thereby promoting local economic activity.

The event concluded with a tour of the facility and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the formal launch of the centre. MTN Nigeria indicated that similar Y’ello Box projects are expected to be deployed in other communities across the country.
