Niger PDP Candidate Nami Pledges Transparent Government

By Ayomide Otitoju

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Niger State, Mohammed Mamman Nami, has pledged to run a transparent and accountable government if elected governor in the 2027 election.

Nami, a former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), made the pledge while addressing party supporters and stakeholders during an appreciation visit following his emergence as the PDP’s candidate.

He said his administration would not tolerate practices such as gathering youths at the Government House for cash distribution, describing such activities as inappropriate for a modern government.

Nami also criticised the alleged use of the Government House premises for activities involving intoxicating substances, saying he would ensure the seat of government was protected from such activities if elected.

The PDP candidate pledged that public funds would be managed transparently and said he would not divert state resources to acquire personal properties in Nigeria or abroad.

He also said empowerment programmes would be redesigned to reflect the realities of the digital age, rather than relying on indiscriminate cash distribution.

According to Nami, beneficiaries of government empowerment schemes should be properly registered, with their bank account details captured to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution of funds.

He further said his proposed administration would prioritise prudent management of public resources and ensure that government interventions were properly targeted.

Earlier, Niger State PDP Chairman Mohammed Halidu said the party was prepared for the 2027 governorship election and expressed confidence in Nami’s ability to lead the state.

Halidu said the party would campaign on what it described as shortcomings and challenges of the current administration while presenting the PDP candidate as an alternative to voters.

Nami was adopted as the PDP’s candidate after other aspirants stepped down and supported his candidacy, according to the party’s state leadership.
