The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Nasiru Marafa, has been shot dead while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The university announced his death in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi.
According to the statement, Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, although the university did not disclose the location of the incident or provide further details on the circumstances surrounding his death.
“The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), regrets to announce the sudden and untimely passing of the University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Marafa,” the statement said.
NOUN described Marafa as a dedicated and committed staff member who served the institution in various positions of responsibility.
The university said he was appointed Bursar in September 2026 and assumed the position with a strong sense of duty and commitment to the institution’s advancement.
It described his death as a profound loss to the university community, saying his passing had thrown staff and students into mourning.
“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement posted on the university’s X handle read.
The university extended its condolences to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by his death.
It added that details of his burial arrangements would be communicated by the family when available.
As of the time of filing this report, no further details had emerged on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
