Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday in Anambra State, reiterating that the 2027 general elections will be a contest between Nigerians and poor leadership.
Addressing party members, Obi urged citizens to participate in the ADC’s ongoing online registration, emphasizing the need for broad engagement ahead of the elections.
“With the agreement of all national leaders, some of whom are here today, I urge everyone to register and obtain your card. We want to register as many Nigerians as possible,” Obi said. “The 2027 election will be Nigerians fighting for justice.”
Obi also highlighted the role of the South-East in Nigeria’s national leadership, stating that no region can claim to be more Nigerian than the South-East. “Everywhere you go in Nigeria, you see someone from the South-East living and doing business there. We in the South-East are saying we want a new Nigeria — a Nigeria where a child of nobody can succeed without knowing anybody,” he said.
The former governor stressed that addressing poverty is key to tackling insecurity. “A Nigeria where we lift citizens out of poverty will naturally see a reduction in criminality. The more people we pull out of poverty, the more we reduce insecurity,” Obi added.
He also called on ADC members to recruit new supporters into the party, describing the task as “becoming fishers of men.”
Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, and former lawmaker and presidential aide, Ben Obi, also completed their registrations during the exercise. Party leaders had earlier launched the registration campaign in Awka, urging members to return to their wards to enroll and mobilize additional Nigerians.
Obi registered at Agulu Ward 2 in Anaocha Local Government Area, Umeh at Aguluzigbo Ward 1, and Ben Obi at Agulu Awka in Awka South Local Government Area, all within Anambra State.
