The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), clearing the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council meeting.
The council meeting, held at the State House and presided over by President Tinubu, included Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission. Key federal officials such as Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Ministers of Police Affairs and FCT, among others, were also present.
Governors praised Disu’s career achievements. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State highlighted Disu’s leadership of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021, noting his contributions to crime control. Governors Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa and Peter Mbah of Enugu, as well as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, also commended his efficiency and strategic impact in security management.
Disu, 59, was appointed acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. Before assuming the acting role, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos and previously held senior positions including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
Over his career, Disu has commanded SARS and anti-kidnapping operations across Rivers, Ondo, and Oyo States, and served as head of the Intelligence Response Team, a position once held by Abba Kyari. He has also served as Divisional Police Officer in multiple locations in Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers States.
At a handover ceremony at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Disu pledged to lead with professionalism, modernism, and accountability. “My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” he said, addressing senior officers and family members.
