Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on leading Afrobeats stars, including Burna Boy, Davido and Asake, to establish charitable foundations to support vulnerable Nigerians and complement government efforts.
Speaking on Saturday at the launch of the National Community Food Bank in Lokoja, Kogi State, Mrs Tinubu said Nigeria has many wealthy individuals who should do more to assist the less privileged.
She noted that while the government continues to implement social intervention programmes, greater support from successful Nigerians, particularly those in the entertainment industry, would help ease the burden of poverty across the country.
The First Lady cited international music star Akon as an example of a celebrity known for his philanthropic activities and urged Nigerian entertainers to emulate such initiatives.
According to her, successful musicians can make a significant impact by supporting small-scale traders and other vulnerable groups through organised charitable foundations.
She stressed that owning luxury cars and other expensive assets should not prevent wealthy individuals from investing in the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Mrs Tinubu also encouraged Nigerians to embrace legitimate businesses, regardless of their size, recounting the story of a graduate who started selling local snacks after failing to secure paid employment. She said the young entrepreneur later received support that enabled him to expand his business and employ 12 workers.
As part of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s empowerment programme, the First Lady announced the donation of ₦100 million to support 2,000 petty traders in Kogi State.
Under the programme, each beneficiary will receive ₦50,000 to recapitalise and expand existing businesses.
She expressed satisfaction with the enthusiasm shown by the beneficiaries, noting that many welcomed her with locally made food items, which she described as evidence that the empowerment message was resonating with the people.
Mrs Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting small businesses and improving the livelihoods of Nigerians through targeted empowerment programmes.
