OPay Faces Scrutiny Over Fraud Allegations, Legal Disputes

By Ayomide Otitoju

Nigerian fintech firm OPay is facing mounting scrutiny following a wave of fraud allegations, frozen accounts, and legal battles between January and July 2025.

Among the high-profile cases is a ₦95 million fraud-related contempt charge against OPay Director Wuritka Dauda, who allegedly ignored a court order. Another involves the Osun State High Court ordering OPay to unfreeze a user’s account and pay ₦500,000 in damages for rights violations.

Further controversy surrounds allegations of unlawful deductions from customer accounts, including a pending ₦30 million lawsuit by Suleiman Mohammed Dikwa at the Jos High Court.

Though not directly named, OPay’s vulnerability was spotlighted when the Nigeria Sanctions Committee linked fintech services to networks allegedly financing terrorism. The company also came under fire for freezing a religious donation account and rejecting identity verification documents repeatedly.

Industry experts and digital rights advocates are calling for stricter regulatory oversight by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

With trust in digital banking platforms at stake, analysts stress the urgent need for transparent protocols, stronger customer support systems, and greater legal accountability.
