Former Anambra State Governor and politician Peter Obi has offered to meet the bail conditions for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, who remains in detention following his arraignment in a defamation case involving prominent lawyer Afe Babalola.
Farotimi was granted bail by an Ekiti Magistrate Court on conditions that included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own property), surrendering his passport, and abstaining from media interviews.
In a statement shared on Friday via X, Tanko Yunusa, a former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, explained Obi’s commitment to ensuring that legal processes are respected while resolving the issue.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of the rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa wrote.
Obi expressed his desire for a resolution that upholds the legal system and benefits all parties involved. He also extended his appreciation to everyone working towards resolving the matter.
Farotimi’s detention has drawn significant attention from activists and legal professionals, who view the case as a test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice and free speech.
