The Presidency has declared that no Nigerian politician, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, stands a chance of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, made the statement on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Responding to mounting calls for Jonathan to join the 2027 race, Bwala described the proposal as politically unrealistic and potentially damaging to the former leader’s global reputation.
“I see some unscrupulous elements trying to hoodwink former President Goodluck Jonathan into politics so they can destroy his reputation, which he has been building globally since leaving office,” he said. “The southern Nigeria where Jonathan comes from has already turned to us. You have seen governors coming.”
Bwala also questioned the motives of northern politicians reportedly backing Jonathan, pointing out that many were among his fiercest critics when he was in office.
“The elements in the north asking him to run—were they not the ones who chased him away? What hope does he have that this time they mean well? The political class trying to cajole him into politics is not doing it in his interest. I believe President Jonathan is smarter than that,” he said.
He insisted that Tinubu’s political strength remains unmatched.
“But if President Jonathan decides to run, I will speak to facts, not conjecture: there is not a single politician in Nigeria today with the capacity to knock off President Bola Tinubu,” Bwala stated.
