Qatar’s Saad al-Kaabi has warned that exports from the Gulf region could stop “within weeks” if the conflict involving Iran intensifies, threatening global energy markets with severe disruption.
In an interview with the Financial Times published Friday, al-Kaabi said prolonged hostilities would impact worldwide economic growth. “Everybody’s energy price is going to go higher. There will be shortages of some products and there will be a chain reaction of factories that cannot supply,” he stated.
The warning follows Qatar’s suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production on Monday, after Iran launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Qatar and neighbouring Gulf states. The attacks came in response to US and Israeli strikes that began on Saturday. Iran’s targeting of energy infrastructure has already pushed gas prices higher and raised alarms globally.
Qatar accounts for roughly 20 percent of global LNG supply, a key source balancing demand across Asia and Europe. Al-Kaabi added that all Gulf exporters could soon invoke force majeure, a legal clause freeing companies from contractual obligations during extraordinary events. “All exporters in the Gulf region will have to call force majeure,” he said, noting that even if hostilities ended immediately, restoring normal delivery cycles could take “weeks to months.”
Experts have highlighted the broader regional impact. Thijs Van de Graaf said tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has plummeted, forcing producers reliant on the route, including Iraq, to halt operations. “This could have long-term, knock-on effects, because you do not turn on and off an oil well like flipping the switch of a light,” Van de Graaf told Al Jazeera.
The conflict shows no sign of easing. Senior US officials have threatened “death and destruction” on Iran, while Tehran continues missile and drone attacks despite international condemnation.
In a social media post Friday, Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran remains “committed to lasting peace in the region yet we have no hesitation in defending our nation’s dignity & sovereignty.” He added that any mediation efforts must address those “who underestimated the Iranian people and ignited this conflict,” referencing the US and Israel.
