Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday commissioned an ultra-modern hostel facility at the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare manpower and improve student welfare.
The hostel can accommodate more than 250 students and is equipped with training and registration facilities, solar power infrastructure and 24-hour CCTV surveillance.
Speaking at the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu said the project represented an investment in human capital development, student welfare and the quality of healthcare education in the state.
He urged LASCON students, lecturers and management to maintain and make proper use of the facility, assuring that his administration would complete other ongoing projects at the institution.
The governor also said the state government was working towards upgrading LASCON to a degree-awarding institution for nursing.
Sanwo-Olu described nurses as critical to the healthcare system, noting that their skills and dedication were essential to meeting the needs of Lagos’ growing population.
He further disclosed that his administration was pursuing approval for the establishment of a University of Medical Sciences in Lagos State.
According to him, the proposed university would expand the state’s capacity to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals while addressing shortages of skilled manpower in the sector.
The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, commended the governor for his investments in education infrastructure, describing the hostel as a platform for developing the skills and professionalism of future nurses.
The Provost of LASCON, Dr Ayodeji Ogunmuyiwa, also thanked the state government for its investments in the institution and called for further support.
She said the new hostel would increase LASCON’s capacity to train more nurses amid healthcare manpower shortages in Lagos and Nigeria.
Ogunmuyiwa also highlighted the institution’s recent achievements, including a 100 per cent success rate in professional examinations, an upgraded Information and Communication Technology centre and a modern Computer-Based Test centre for digital assessments.
