Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed sympathy to families, organisations, and residents affected by Tuesday’s fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate and shocking,” the Governor said the loss of lives and destruction of property was a heavy blow to the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu commiserated with the management and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and United Capital Plc, which lost four and six employees respectively in the tragedy.
“The fire incident at Afriland Towers on Broad Street was worrisome and a significant loss to the Lagos State Government, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, United Capital Plc, and other companies and individuals, with property worth millions of naira destroyed,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and the management of all organisations that lost their loved ones in the incident. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
The Governor also extended his condolences to traders at Central Plaza, near Mandilas Market, who lost goods worth millions of naira in the inferno. He pledged the state government’s continued support for fire prevention measures and interventions to avert similar tragedies.
Sanwo-Olu commended the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Federal Fire Service, and other first responders for their swift action in containing the blaze and minimising casualties.
