Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed on Sunday after the Super Eagles fell 4–3 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African play-offs final.
The tense encounter in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1–1 after regular and extra time, forcing a penalty shootout in which the Leopards edged Nigeria to secure Africa’s sole ticket to next year’s intercontinental play-offs.
The Super Eagles made a bright start, taking the lead just three minutes into the match through midfielder Frank Onyeka. Despite creating further chances, Nigeria failed to extend their advantage, allowing the Congolese side to grow into the game.
DR Congo found their equaliser in the 32nd minute when Mechak Elia struck to restore parity. The first half ended 1–1, but Nigeria suffered a setback when star striker Victor Osimhen did not return for the second half.
Both sides pushed for a winner through extra time, but neither could break the deadlock, leading to the decisive shootout that ended Nigeria’s World Cup campaign.
