President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare and professionalism of the Nigerian armed forces. Speaking on Thursday at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Defence Complex and the inauguration of an army barracks named after him in Abuja, Tinubu lauded the sacrifices of military personnel and pledged continued support for their efforts to safeguard the nation.
The President described the events as milestones in his administration’s agenda to bolster national security and improve military infrastructure. “This ceremony marks the beginning of a renewed commitment to our armed forces and the values we hold dear as a democracy. It signifies a new chapter in our pledge to ensure the safety and security of our people,” Tinubu said in a statement released by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
He added: “As your Commander-in-Chief, I pledge unwavering support for our troops and their families. Under our Renewed Hope Administration, I reaffirm my commitment to building a well-equipped and truly professional military that embodies our nation’s pride.”
Commending Military Efforts and Innovation
Tinubu praised the armed forces for their resilience under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa. “Your dedication, courage, and resilience protect our freedoms and uphold the principles upon which our nation was founded,” he said.
The President highlighted advancements in domestic military production, showcasing locally assembled Tactical Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs). “These vehicles are a testament to the progress made in our defence sector. They will enhance operational efficiency while boosting the economy,” Tinubu stated.
He credited the achievements to the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, the Command Engineering Depot of the Nigerian Army, and private firms such as EPAIL and ProForce, which have contributed significantly to local defence manufacturing.
A Vision for the Defence Complex
Tinubu expressed confidence that the new Defence Complex would serve as a hub of excellence and a national monument. “This edifice will symbolise our nation’s respect and admiration for the armed forces and their unwavering service. When completed, it will re-energise leaders committed to the safety of our citizens,” he said.
The President pledged that the first phase of the complex would be completed within his administration’s tenure.
A Call for Unity and Honour
Reflecting on the significance of the event, which closely follows the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Tinubu called on Nigerians to work together for a brighter future. He honoured the sacrifices of fallen heroes and those wounded in the line of duty, emphasising their enduring legacy in ensuring peace and security.
Military Leaders Respond
Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa highlighted the urgent need for the modern Defence Complex, stating that the current Garki headquarters, originally designed as a temporary office, had become inadequate. “The new facility will symbolise modernisation and dedication in our armed forces,” Musa said.
Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede expressed gratitude for the President’s unwavering support, assuring him of the military’s loyalty and commitment to the nation.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event was attended by key figures, including Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau (representing the Senate President), Speaker of the House of Representatives Honourable Tajuddeen Abbas, Senator Ahmad Lawan, Minister of Defence Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris Malagi, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Chief of Staff to the President Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, among others.
Service Chiefs and senior military officials were also present, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the armed forces and the nation.
