President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive for the immediate release of all minors detained over their alleged involvement in August’s #EndBadGovernance protests. The announcement was made by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an emergency briefing at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on Monday.
Idris stated, “The President has instructed that all minors detained by the Nigeria Police be released without prejudice to any ongoing legal processes. They are to be released immediately.”
The President also directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure the well-being of the minors and facilitate their safe reunification with their families. Additionally, an administrative committee led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs will be established to review the circumstances of their arrest, detention, and treatment.
Tinubu further mandated an investigation into the conduct of law enforcement officers involved in the arrests, with disciplinary action to be taken against any officials found to have violated procedures.
The directive follows public outcry over the recent arraignment of at least 76 people, including 30 minors aged 14 to 17, who face charges of treason, property destruction, public disturbance, and mutiny.
