Umo Eno has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing a sustainable aviation ecosystem following the successful maiden international flight from Uyo to Accra, Ghana.
Speaking to journalists in Uyo after returning from the inaugural trip, the governor described the flight as a significant milestone in positioning Akwa Ibom as a regional hub for tourism, trade, and investment. He said the development signals the state’s readiness to participate in the global aviation space.
Eno also announced the creation of a Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development to drive the next phase of growth, noting that the new structure would enhance oversight, improve operational efficiency, and attract more international airlines.
According to him, the state’s aviation ecosystem has expanded with critical infrastructure in place, alongside continued investment in training pilots and engineers to support long-term growth.
Stakeholders at the briefing described the development as a major boost to the state’s economy and global visibility.
A federal lawmaker, Ekong Sampson, said the successful international flight reflects Akwa Ibom’s commitment to sustained development and global relevance, adding that it opens up new opportunities for economic growth and regional leadership.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, commended the initiative, describing it as a notable achievement that elevates the state’s standing within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The maiden flight is expected to enhance regional connectivity, unlock new economic opportunities, and accelerate Akwa Ibom’s ambition to become a key hub for tourism, trade, and investment across West and Central Africa.
