Union Bank of Nigeria has filed a committal application before the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking the imprisonment of six senior officials of OPay Digital Services Limited over alleged disobedience of court orders.
In the motion, the bank listed the managing director of OPay, Gotring Dauda Wutrika, and five directors—Wang Dan, Wen Mingxuan, Duyao Huang Simon, Ozoemena Chijioke, and Abass Rashidat Motunrayo—as alleged contemnors.
Filed under Form 49, the application seeks to have the executives committed to a correctional facility for what Union Bank described as “wilful, deliberate and coordinated disobedience” of preservatory and disclosure orders issued by the court.
The orders, granted on March 26, 2025, and reaffirmed in a judgment delivered on April 15, 2025, directed the respondents to place post-no-debit restrictions on specified accounts linked to disputed transfers and to disclose details of beneficiaries as well as reverse recovered funds.
Union Bank is also asking the court to order that the affected officials remain in custody until they purge themselves of contempt, including possible detention in any correctional centre or under the custody of security agencies.
The bank argued that OPay, despite being duly served with the court orders and subsequent judgment, failed to comply with directives to restrict accounts, disclose beneficiary details, and reverse allegedly wrongfully transferred funds.
It further alleged that the named executives, as principal officers of the fintech company, acted in concert to frustrate the execution of the court’s orders and deprive the bank of recovered funds.
The Federal High Court is expected to take a date for hearing on the committal application.
