Union Bank of Nigeria, through its UnionCares initiative, has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive education by sponsoring the Ajofa Special Education Foundation for the Deaf Mathematics Competition at the Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired in Surulere, Lagos.
Held under the theme “Impacting Deaf Students and Life with Mathematics in Nigeria,” the competition brought together ten students from various schools for the hearing impaired across Lagos. It was attended by representatives of Union Bank, the Lagos State Education Board, school principals, and teachers.
The event aimed to promote academic inclusion and provide a platform for students with hearing disabilities to demonstrate their intellectual capabilities in mathematics.
Speaking at the event, Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, praised the students’ performance.
“At Union Bank, we believe in inclusive development. These students are not defined by their circumstances—they are mathematicians and problem-solvers shaping a new narrative,” she said.
Founder of the Ajofa Foundation, Francis Ajomiwe, expressed gratitude to the bank for its support, noting that the foundation remains committed to advancing educational opportunities for the deaf community through targeted programmes.
A representative from the Lagos State Education Authority, Bukunola Famakinwa, highlighted the importance of mathematics as a tool for informed decision-making and societal participation.
“With the right support, deaf learners can thrive in mathematics and beyond,” she stated.
The top three winners—Samuel Megbodofo, Tomilola Shonubi, and Opeoluwa Saka—received prizes and branded items from Union Bank. Other participants and educators were also recognized and presented with gifts.
The competition underscored Union Bank’s ongoing investment in education equity and inclusive innovation through partnerships that empower underserved communities across Nigeria.
