Union Bank of Nigeria has been named Best Company in Workplace Practice at the Sustainability, Enterprise and Responsibility Awards (SERAS), held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the Grand Ballroom of the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The recognition followed a rigorous evaluation by SERAS’ independent multinational judges, who assessed applicants based on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability initiatives.
Union Bank was nominated in four categories: SERAS Education Intervention of the Year, Best Company in Workplace Practice, Best in Gender Equity and Women Empowerment, and Best Company in Reporting and Transparency. The bank also secured first runner-up positions in the Gender Equity and Women Empowerment and Education Intervention categories.
The award highlights Union Bank’s people-first philosophy, which extends beyond traditional human resources practices. Initiatives credited by the judges include a five-month fully paid maternity leave exceeding statutory requirements, the establishment of an onsite crèche at its headquarters, and the highest promotion rate in a decade, with 24% of employees advancing across departments. Staff also received a 40% salary increase, boosting financial wellbeing and productivity.
Judges noted the bank’s commitment to generating social value, particularly in advancing gender equality in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5. Its wellness programmes, mental health support, and flexible work arrangements fostered a more inclusive and supportive work environment, with positive effects on the wider community.
Commenting on the award, Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, said:
“Our workplace initiatives are anchored in our triple pillar model of Citizenship, Sustainability, and Innovation. The measurable outcomes, including enhanced employee satisfaction, increased productivity, and progress in gender inclusion, demonstrate the strength of our approach. We are honoured by this recognition and remain committed to advancing these initiatives across Nigeria.”
Now in its nineteenth year, SERAS has established itself as a benchmark for corporate social responsibility and sustainability excellence. This year’s edition, themed “Sustainability 2.0: Innovating for Impact and Inclusive Growth”, celebrated companies and leaders driving measurable community and industry impact through creative, technological, and strategic initiatives.
