The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Unity Bank Plc, Ebenezer Kolawole, has renewed the Bank’s call for young Nigerians to adopt a consistent savings culture, describing it as essential for long-term stability and financial resilience.
Kolawole delivered the message to students of Alvana Model Secondary School, Owerri, Imo State, during a financial literacy session held to mark this year’s World Savings Day. He was represented by Unity Bank’s Zonal Head for the South East/South South, William Odigie.
Reaffirming the Bank’s commitment to deepening financial inclusion among young people, Kolawole said the initiative aligns with the 2024 World Savings Day theme, “Beyond Savings – Building Financial Resilience.” Unity Bank joined other financial institutions across the country in simultaneous training sessions coordinated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Bankers’ Committee, Deposit Money Banks, and Junior Achievement Nigeria.
Kolawole emphasised that savings are “foundational to financial planning, financial management, and investment,” urging students to view saving not as a routine activity but as a tool for achieving long-term financial independence and security. He added that early exposure to financial education helps young people manage economic uncertainties and pursue their goals more effectively.
Unity Bank staff facilitated training sessions nationwide, offering students practical lessons on budgeting, setting financial goals, and general money management through seminars and workshops.
World Savings Day, observed annually on October 31, promotes the importance of savings as a driver of financial resilience. In Nigeria, Deposit Money Banks partner with the CBN and other organisations to deliver financial literacy programmes to young people.
Unity Bank stated that its participation reflects its ongoing commitment to youth empowerment and strengthening financial literacy across the country.
