The grave of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is covered in fresh flowers every day, a testament to his enduring support, according to his widow, Yulia Navalnaya. Speaking on Tuesday, the day her late husband’s autobiography Patriot was released, Navalnaya said the gesture shows that Navalny remains an influential figure despite the Kremlin’s efforts to isolate him.
“It was crucial for the Moscow regime to make him feel abandoned by everyone. And that’s clearly not the case,” Navalnaya, 48, told French broadcaster France Inter. She highlighted the letters of support Navalny received before his death in February 2024 while imprisoned in a harsh Arctic penal colony. His imprisonment conditions had been widely condemned by international rights groups.
“Even after his death, it continues. There are still huge numbers of supporters of Alexei Navalny. People in Russia visit his grave every day, and it’s always adorned with fresh flowers,” Navalnaya said.
Navalny, who was considered the most prominent opposition figure and critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died after years of political persecution. His widow emphasized that Navalny was “the only real competitor to Vladimir Putin.”
Despite the dangers, Yulia Navalnaya has vowed to continue her husband’s fight. In a BBC interview on Monday, she pledged to return to Russia and stand for election if Putin’s regime ever falls.
Though now living abroad, she acknowledged the risks involved. “I’m not afraid, but I don’t believe I’m 100 percent safe either,” she told France Inter. She criticized the unpredictability of Putin’s regime, which has shown increasing intolerance towards political opposition. “This regime has no real plan or strategy… We cannot predict who will be attacked next.”
Navalnaya warned that the Kremlin would stop at nothing, having already persecuted political rivals, waged war, and, in her words, “killed its main competitor.”
After Navalny’s death, Navalnaya herself was added to Russia’s “terrorists and extremists” blacklist in July. She already faced an arrest warrant for alleged membership in an extremist group. Despite the risks, Navalnaya has vowed to carry on her husband’s legacy and opposition efforts from abroad.
